You will feel comfortable if you take your own precaution

Is it safe to fly these days?

These days due to global outbreak of the corona virus, planes are cleaner than ever. All the people are applying precautions while travelling and airports are also checking each and every passenger arriving or departing the airport.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is working 24/7 to analyse data, provide preventive advice, help countries prepare, increase supplies during this Public Health Emergency of International Concern as declared by the WHO on 29th January, 2020.

The WHO is advising people to keep a distance of at least a meter (3 feet) away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Many travelers have postponed their flight tickets in wake of this virus. However, people seem to fly often due to various reasons.

If you have already booked to fly, you may well be worried about your safety as you transit through the airport and spend time on the plane during flights.

Despite this, you may also feel comfortable to travel if your take your own precautions wisely. At first, ensure that you are fit and well to travel. People with weak immune system are caught by the virus quickly.

There are few precautions you can take to be safe from being caught by the Corona virus when in the air.

Use of Mask

The WHO estimated that around 89 million masks are needed per month to protect people from #Covid19. To meet this rising demand, WHO estimates that the production should be increased by 40 percent.

When the whole world is prioritizing masks, experts say that they have not been proven as a effective means of protection. It is effective only when the affected one wears them. It could stop the transfer of virus to other individual.

Majority of people are cancelling or postponing their flight worrying about the sharing of air in the aircraft cabin on board. But as reported, the cabin air is relatively safer, with air filters resembling those used in the operation theatres.

Majority of the aircraft are equipped with True High-Efficiency Particle Filters or High-Efficiency Particle Filters (HEPA) to keep the air cleaner on board. Not a single case of COVID19 has been reported to be transmitted on board.

Soap and Hand Sanitizer

The most effective way to protect yourself from COVID-19 along with any other virus is to wash your hands frequently. Focus on using regular soap and water and if possible sanitizer, and sure to scrub for at least 20 seconds.

Some of the busy airports seem to be empty

Due to alarming demand of the sanitizer along with soap, there is shortage of these items all around the affected countries. Instead, you can use a hand sanitizer that contains 60-90% of alcohol.

"Even if there is a virus in the inanimate environment, it's not going to jump off the seat and bite you in the ankle. You've got to touch it, and then touch your nose or your mouth. So it's those hands we have that are the important intermediary and that's where I would put the emphasis." said Dr. William Schaffner, professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University's division of infectious diseases.

It is wise to wise down the surfaces of the planes with antibacterial wipes, but washing your hands is the most important preventive measure to be safe from COVID-19.

It is also suggested to wipe the food trays and seat belts during the flight, but masks have been shown to be ineffective.

When you are on a flight, do not try to touch items placed near to you, such as magazines, as they are less likely to have been sanitized between flights. In fact, many airlines gave already removed these items entirely from their flights.

Choose a window seat

During travel in current scenario, it would be wise to choose either a window seat or a seat toward the front of the cabin. These places are least likely to be infected than other seats within the flight deck.
