A person who was on the runway 17R of the Austin International Airport was struck and killed by an airplane last week on 7th May.

A Southwest Boeing 737-700, which was operating flight WN1392 from Dallas, Texas was involved in this incident while it was landing in Austin.


A watch commander for the Austin Police Department said that struck person was not dressed as an airport worker and did not have an ID as reported immediately after the incident.


However, the identity of the person was found later by the police. Police reported that he was 22-year-old, Junin Ko. Ko was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m. on Thursday.

20:14:46 (Austin Tower): Affirmative, uh, the Southwest has parked on golf right now, they're just holding on position uh, they said when they touched down on runway 17R, they spotted somebody on foot on the runways out there.

20:15:26 (???): Affirm, I'm on ground frequency sir.


20:16:47 (Austin Tower): ((Mostly unclear, but may be to close runway 17R))


20:17:27 (Austin Tower): Southwest 1392, I have a number for you to copy down, the uh supervisor would like to talk to you um, just, if you have any more questions.

The Austin Tower and SWA1392 continued their discussion up to 20:18:38 after SWA1392 was informed to continue taxiing.

The Boeing 737-700 with registration N401WN was delivered to Southwest Airlines back in March 2001, and is currently 19.1 years old.

A total of 58 people including 53 passengers and 5 crew members were on-board the plane.




After the incident took place, the airport authorities have closed the runway 17R/35L as local authorities along with the FAA are investigating and has been operating flights using the second runway.

After this incident took place on 7th May, Southwest has not operated flight WN1392 from Dallas to Austin.

Southwest Airlines has released a statement regarding this rare incident. The FAA was also quick to respond and has already sent FAA investigators.
