A Mahan Air Airbus A310-300 was approached by two U.S. fighter jets in Syrian skies when the aircraft was en route from Tehran (Iran) to Beirut (Lebanon).

The aircraft was forced to perform an abrupt maneuver to avoid two fighter jets. The interruption forced the plane to take emergency measures that caused injuries among the passengers.

Information from The Aviation Herald indicates that the aircraft was enroute at FL340 about 160nm east of Beirut in Syrian Airspace near the triangle Syria, Jordan and Iraq when the crew performed an abrupt maneouver to avoid the fighter aircraft.

The aircraft had to climb at least 600 feet rapidly, while video shared in internet shows the chaos and fear experienced by the passengers.

The aircraft then subsequently returned to FL340, requested medical assistance for the arrival at Beirut and continued to Beirut for a landing without further incident.

The aircraft achieved a safe landing at 19:50 local time. Multiple number of passengers needed medical assistance. However, the Medical Services (Red Cross) in Beirut reported no passengers needed to be taken to a hospital.

The U.S. fighter jets came within a distance of 100 meters (328 feet) of the Mahan Airbus A310. The same report of the incident also indicates that the crew abruptly took the aircraft to a lower altitude to avoid a collision with the jets.

US Central Command just released statement confirming it was a US F-15 saying:

"A U.S. F-15 on a routine air mission in the vicinity of the CJTF-OIR At Tanf garrison in Syria conducted a standard visual inspection of a Mahan Air passenger airliner at a safe distance of approximately 1,000 meters from the airliner this evening."

"The visual inspection occurred to ensure the safety of coalition personnel at At Tanf garrison. Once the F-15 pilot identified the aircraft as a Mahan Air passenger plane, the F-15 safely opened distance from the aircraft. The professional intercept was conducted in accordance with international standards."

Video shared and posted in internet by a passenger onboard the aircraft, it shows many passengers in the cabin screaming and panicking as seen at the last in the video.

The Mahan Air Airbus A310-300, with registration EP-MNF was delivered to the airline back in July, 2013. However, the aircraft was initially delivered to Lufthansa back in November 1990 and is currently 30 years old.

The aircraft was in operation with Air Transat and Vertir Airlines before being delivered to Mahan Airlines.

Iranian activist and researcher Hamidreza Gholamzadeh calls the fighter jet maneuver "an unacceptable violation of law, sovereignty of Syria and humanity."
