A plane crashed into a residential building in the German state of North-Rhine Westphalia. Three people were killed when the ultralight airplane crashed into houses. Along with the death of three people a child suffered injury.

North Rhine-Westphalia police said that the roof of the apartment building in the town of Wesel caught fire after the ultralight plane crashed into it.

Witnesses told reporters that the aircraft had collided with a hot-air balloon shortly before the crash. The spokesperson said the plane probably took off from Marl airfield.

The crashed aircraft had a capacity to carry two people, but police said it was not yet clear how many people were on board and the three people who lost their lives in the crash have not yet been identified.

The child injured in the accident is said to have suffered only minor injuries. He was not on board the aircraft and is thought to have been living in one of the five apartments in the building.

Rescue workers found a parachute near the crash site, which police believed to be an emergency parachute from the ultralight plane.

Regarding this incident, Wesel police spokesman Peter Reuters said:

"What we know so far is that at 2.40pm here in Wesel, an ultralight aircraft crashed into a residential building, whose attic went up in flames."

"On the first inspection of the house, three dead bodies were found in the attic. They are adults. A child was also slightly injured and shocked."

"We cannot give any information as to their identities at the moment. We are still investigating the cause of the crash."

"We are using search dogs as we still have no reliable information on the whereabouts of the pilot and co-pilot. So we are using rescue dogs to conduct a thorough search of the area around the crash site," he added.

"To our knowledge the plane started its flight in Marl and made a pitstop here in Wesel. It then flew off again and shortly afterwards it crashed."
