Air India Express Boeing 737 Crashed On Runway, 20 Died, Hundreds Injured

Air India Express Boeing 737-800 has crash landed at Kozhikode (CCJ), India, breaking apart after falling down an embankment.

The B737 was operating Dubai-Kozhokode flight X1344 with 184 passengers on board and landed at 7:41pm at the airport. According to airlines sources, it appeared to have overshot the runway.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the plane landed in heavy rain and after landing on runway 10. Upon landing, the aircraft continued until the end and fell down in the valley and broke into two.

Twenty people, including both pilots, were killed on Friday when the jet crash landed, officials said.  At least 24 ambulances and fire tenders have been rushed to the airport.

According to officials of the Kerala Police, at least 35 people have been reported injured and shifted to various hospitals.

"We are still searching for around 100 people," said officials who said that shortage of torches and incessant rain were causing the rescue process to halt.

Regarding the incident, Air India Express spokesperson said:

"Air India Express flight IX 1344 operated by B737 aircraft from Dubai to Calicut overshot runway at Kozhikode at 1941 hours tonight. No fire reported at the time of landing."

"There are 174 passengers, 10 infants, two pilots and five cabin crew on board the aircraft," added the airline.

"As per the initial reports, rescue operations are on and passengers are being taken to hospital for medical care," it added.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said he has instructed the police and fire Force to take urgent action. "Have also directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for rescue and medical support," he added in a tweet.

We here at Aero World express condolences to those affected by the crash.

  1. It seems The plane did go round for sometime to use up the fuel as there was a landing gear failure and they knew it, so it had to crash land, now to ensure it doesn't catch fire, it went on go round and then touched down and then the gear did not stand erect so it broke mid way and people at front died. Hence there was no fire after landing. Pilot and crew did great job in minimising the casualties.

  2. Pilot had switched off Engine by the time Plane was landing so there was no Oil which saved Plane from catching Fire. That's why there was no smoke seen coming up from the Crashed Plane.
